WordPress.com is this insanely, ridiculously simple and useful tool that literally gets a website up in minutes.
To see just how ridiculous, right click a new tab here so you can tab between this page and the WordPress.com setup.
Your new tab is the WordPress start page unless you already have a WordPress account and are logged in.
If you don’t and this looks all new to you, COOL! Choose “get started” on the WordPress start page, and complete the following steps.
When you’re done look at the links following our tutorial below for some great ideas on building great content. (All steps are as of this writing. They may change but the basic simplicity will be always be this intuitive unless the WordPress crew decides to make it even easier.)
If this is old hat to you then click this link to learn how we can help make your health and fitness website rock.
Six ridiculously simple steps to a killer, free WordPress site
1. Choose what the site is about
Choose from the gaggle of selections for what your site is about. Don’t get too wrapped up in the choices here, there’s nothing you can’t change later. We are a Health/Wellness kind of group, so we select that.
2. Pick a “Home Page to Look Like”
Just like what’s the site about, you can change this later. We’re going to pick “A welcome page for my site”.
3. Choose a “Theme”
Pick a theme that matches your style. WordPress themes are the visual elements of the site. Colors, texture, graphics, fonts, all the visual elements get plugged in through a theme. They are crazy easy to change, so don’t fret too much here. Go with your gut, you can change it later. We’re choosing Goran.
4. Find a Domain
Pick what you want your site called. As mentioned earlier, when you use the free tier of WordPress.com you’ll find the name appended. Later, we’ll show you how you can simply link this site to your existing office site. That way you’ll not have to worry about any potential HIPPA or other client info based management and scheduling tools. Call it what you want. We’re going to choose “CopyWritingPlusDemo”.
5. Pick a plan
WordPress.com gives you a few solid plans to choose from. Each plan has different options as you’ll see. We’re going to choose Free. You can change this later, meaning that you’ll be able to customize with more options if you want to upgrade.
The most awesome thing about using WordPress is that any time you can upgrade to a WordPress.com premiuim tier and style your site to your business needs, or get a hosted WordPress site and go where your imagination and budget take you. The WordPress team of happiness engineers are an excellent group of people and will gladly assist in any help you need.
We’re going to assume here you’ll pull the trigger on the free WordPress . It’s a great place to start simply because you can scale it up or down between options easily.
6. Create an account
Key in an email address, a user-name (or take the default), a password, and follow the prompts. WordPress is really good about not freaking your in-box with Spam and not selling your email.
Click continue and you’ll be taken to the free health and fitness WordPress.com site. Now it’s time to figure out how to tie your site into your office.
It’s easy to see the greatly simplified Internet publishing technology of WordPress. WordPress makes getting on-line in a hurry easy and it doesn’t have to cost you a dime.
What’s cloudy is getting site content and what to do with it. That’s the stuff of content-marketing, and it’s what we do here at CopyWritingPlus.
It’s also easy to get trapped into SEO and marketing schemes. Below are some basics on getting started, staying out of trouble, and what to look out for.
What’s particularly appealing about what we’ve just done is it’s all FREE.
- Free to click
- Free to sign up
- Free to get started
- Free to use
- Free forever
There are caveats of course. Your domain will be appended with [yourdomain].wordpress.com, you won’t have full access to the plug-in guts that let you add any plug-in you choose (in fact you can’t add any plug-ins, but this isn’t really a bad thing), and your visitors will see ads pertinent to the site content.
